ABSTRACT

In television and video sound is as important as the picture. The term audio is used to describe sound that has been changed into an electrical signal so that it can be recorded, transmitted, and replayed. Differences in the loudness, or intensity, of a sound can be seen as differences in the amplitude, or height, of the sound wave. Differences in pitch are visible in sound waves as differences in the frequency of the waves. Location sound is picked up and channeled into the video-recording system with a microphone. The pickup pattern of a microphone refers to the directions in which it is sensitive to incoming sound. Omnidirectional microphones pickup sound equally from all directions. Unidirectional microphones have a narrower, more directional pickup pattern. Cardioid microphones have a heart-shaped pickup pattern. The dynamic microphone contains a diaphragm that is attached to a coil of wire wrapped around a magnet.
