ABSTRACT

Effective control of the sound portion of a program involves control of the aesthetics of sound as well as control of sound from a technical standpoint. Just as changes in lighting, camera position, and shot composition can affect the audience’s perception of a scene, so can manipulation of the audio. Voice is the predominant type of sound found in most video programs. Natural sound is an extremely important component of video field production. In contrast to the naturalness and reality of natural sound, music is one of the most unrealistic sound elements within a program. In studio video production, sound effects (SFX) are often used to present the natural sounds of the location being depicted. Two important aesthetic variables commonly associated with sound are perspective and presence. In any kind of documentary or informational program, basic decisions about the structure of the audio portion of the program center on the presence or absence of a narrator or host.
