ABSTRACT

Editing is an invisible art. Editing is the process of arranging individual shots or sequences into an appropriate order. Television directors have always had the ability to choose and order the shots within a program. The process of editing includes making a series of aesthetic judgments, through which the editor decides how the production should look, and performing a series of technical operations to carry out the editing decisions. This chapter focuses on the aesthetic elements involved in editing. The video editor is potentially one of the most creative members of the production team. The autonomous creative editor is an individual with significant responsibility for making and executing editing decisions. The subordinate technical editor is usually primarily an editing system operator who is thoroughly familiar with the operation of the hardware and software in the editing system. The technical editor executes editing decisions made by someone else.
