ABSTRACT

For most of the last half of the 20th century, video recording was dominated by the process of magnetic recording onto videotape. With the advent of digital technologies, methods of video recording have changed. Most production facilities rely on tapeless recording and videotape has been replaced by digital media. Digital recording media include flash memory cards and devices, computer hard disk drives and video servers, and optical media like digital optical discs (DVD) and Blu-ray discs. Flash memory cards and devices use silicon chips instead of magnetic media to store data. A hard disk is a magnetic storage system that is widely used in computers. Information is stored on a series of round magnetic platters within the computers. Compact discs and DVDs are two examples of relatively inexpensive optical disc playback and recording systems. Sony's XDCAM is a professional optical disc camcorder. A variety of different compression methods are used in digital video systems.
