ABSTRACT
One of the main tasks of applying the capability approach within development is the selection of normatively relevant capabilities and functionings. Unfortunately, both the development and capability literature offer little guidance in this respect. This chapter fills this lacuna and contributes to both sets of literature by identifying four general criteria that a selection of capabilities and functionings for development should satisfy. These are methodological justification, normative justification, democratic legitimacy, and contextual sensitivity.
