ABSTRACT

Writers are the Hollywood development professionals who pitch new ideas for pilots and series to TV networks. This chapter looks at the standard Hollywood TV pitch format and the strategies that writers and their partners use for successful pitches. The standard pitch format has eight sections including articulating the concept of the series and its themes, defining the world of the series, describing the most important characters of the series, pitching the story of the pilot episode, laying out the arc of the first season or the arc of the whole series if the writer knows it, describing the tone of the series, and offering short pitches for additional sample episodes beyond the pilot.
