ABSTRACT

People assemble in a theater, whose form in its idea-type image is a hemicycle, which assists them to imagine together how they might serve their aspirations to live good lives in the good city. Among our seven examples the oldest, begun in 340 BCE, was for Greek drama to portray the interactions between gods and people. Our last, begun in 1872, was built for people to enjoy the immersive, mythological experience of Richard Wagner’s operas. Among other purposes theaters serve include governing and gaining and passing along new knowledge.
