ABSTRACT

Since philosophy’s intervention is always at the point of conceptualizations and theorization, this chapter critically examines the relationship between theory and practice in the delineation of the idea of a sound and relevant philosophical practice that backstops a tradition of Nigerian philosophy. The basic question then is that of how philosophical research in Nigeria can be made coherent with the idea of an emerging tradition of Nigerian philosophy. Afolayan, in this chapter, highlights three significant challenges to philosophical research in Nigeria—the challenge of ethnography, of interdisciplinarity, and of policy relevance.
