ABSTRACT

Storage space is at a premium in small dwellings. Often our view of available spaces is limited to counter tops, shelves, drawers and cupboards. Let’s take a nonlinear approach to viewing space by looking above, under, behind and in between. Unused spaces can be found on ceilings, walls and adjacent spaces between walls and large appliances. The insides of cabinet doors and undersides of shelves are seldom used. Negative spaces between objects are unused spaces waiting to be utilized. Let’s take a look at ceiling and wall space solutions and then consider typical storage problems and solutions in other areas. Rose features the following ideas for clients, which can be very useful information for the designer when design small dwellings.
