ABSTRACT

A chief medical officer (CMO) is typically the physician in charge at most hospitals. The nonphysician-CEO likes to see three essential behaviors in the CMO: a reflection of profoundly transformational qualities, e.g. a passion for quality and safety; encouragement of teamwork and collaboration; and a commitment to the mission and values of the organization. Quality physicians as leaders and as possible CEOs of hospitals are the future goal. Input is critical to identifying the issues surrounding hospital personnel, patients, and physicians. In the case of a physician, it can be the quality of life in the practice and satisfaction of the physician. The role of a leader is as varied as the types of leadership styles employed by individuals. Within the hospital environment, the reputation and culture of the institution may dictate one particular leadership style, such as autocratic or democratic.
