ABSTRACT

The film highlights the healthcare practices of five industrialized nations: the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Japan, and Taiwan. All five countries highlighted had better healthcare with better outcomes than the United States. In the UK, the government owns the hospitals and all the doctors are government employees. One important element is that the sickness funds negotiate prices with the medical practices and clinics and hospitals. Taiwan studied successful models from around the world and incorporated only the things that seemed to work. One twist was for Germany, in which the basic coverage was for all, but the wealthy could, instead, opt to purchase their own private insurance instead of accepting the public insurance. The outside organizations that develop quality criteria based on cumulative data, research, and opinions of expert physicians and other folks that are considered healthcare experts come together to decide exactly what to require based on their collaborative opinions.
