ABSTRACT

This chapter is dedicated to scientific literacy, a long-standing construct that has become foundational in educational policies, and science museum mandates and practices. Here, the authors explore the different meanings, interpretations, and applications of scientific literacy – moving from dominant perspectives (which emphasize acquisition and comprehension of concepts) to progressive views (which articulate the discourse of scientific literacy with concepts of citizenship, political engagement, and action). Specifically, the authors consider ways in which theoretical insights into, and practical applications of, scientific literacy have influenced the work of science museums and their exhibitions.
