ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the concept of controversy in science museums is unpacked. The authors begin by theorizing this complicated construct and move to a discussion about the different forms it can take in the science museum world. Distinguishing between exhibitions that are about controversy and those that generate controversy, the chapter proceeds to explore communication and engagement strategies and challenges that emerge for both staff and visitors. The authors conclude by discussing several reasons why controversy is important for science museums and their visiting publics.
