ABSTRACT

The word grammar is one that most of our students will greet with a mixture of fear and loathing. They feel that they should know something about this area of language, particularly as they have put themselves forward for an advanced course in English language. Looking at the links between the core frameworks at A level can only be healthy for students' overall ability to analyse the relationship between producer, receiver, purpose and context. Particularly early on in course, there are many advantages to making grammar, as a framework, the matter of debate and opinion. It allows students to think through how they feel about structure in language without feeling the weight of ignorance upon them. In practical terms, they need to be able to highlight the impact that a grammatical structure has on unseen texts, both at AS and A2 levels.
