ABSTRACT

One of the many amazing aspects of George Eliot’s remarkable artistry is her ability to teach moral truths by using scenes which involve animals. Each interaction between a character and an animal provides a warning against egoism, selfishness, and narrow-mindedness or provides an inspiring example of generous sympathy, fellow feeling, and respect for lasting values. Good people are kind and generous to animals. Bad people are cruel to horses and dogs and use them to manipulate other people and to demonstrate their own power and ability to control.
