ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with a list of the main strategic recommendations made based on each round of interviewing each year. The subsequent sections tell the multi-year stories of specific initiatives related to each recommendation. The recommendations placed both the local and the national pressures in the context of the curse of natural resources and its attendant rise in rent-seeking entrepreneurship. Minera San Cristobal experience with developing stakeholder strategies from open-ended comments, measures of the social licence, and stakeholder network ties illustrates how socio-political risk can be managed in a quantifiable, verifiable way. Meanwhile, the local price of a bag of quanta went from half a bag of rice to three full bags of rice, a 600 per cent increase. This, along with the successful efforts of agricultural and indigenous groups to promote exports to international markets, resulted in a reduction of the income gap between mining families and agricultural families.
