ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the future of public administration. Governments must make more concerted efforts to engage young people in public service. Those students who do volunteer, who do develop an ethic of public service, may well dedicate their careers to public service in government or government’s non-profit partners. As civic involvement becomes an ingrained norm in institutions of education, post-graduate service opportunities have expanded, gaining the attention of students seeking to make a difference and gain invaluable experience before entering the traditional workforce. Informing the public about the accomplishments of the public sector and public servants is also an essential but often neglected duty of government, and may help students follow their public service ethic into public service employment. Public servants who are dedicated to serving their fellow citizens are motivated by desires, in many small ways, to make our society a better place in which to live.
