ABSTRACT

In relation to the colony, the native territories are the masses: fifteen million natives in the Federation of French West Africa, which includes the colonies of Mauritania, Senegal, Soudan, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Dahomey and Niger; five million in the British colonies of the Gambia, Gold Coast and Sierra Leone; twenty million in British Nigeria on the eastern flank of A.O.F. From Cap Blanc to the Gulf of Benin, from Senegal to the Benue, stretches this mass of forty million Africans, with zones of density varying from three per square kilometre for the whole of French West Africa to twenty for Nigeria and twenty-four for Sierra Leone. Within the mass there is a seasonal flow of migratory currents, generally from the interior to the coast.
