ABSTRACT
This chapter serves as one of the first introductions to a relatively unexplored topic in the academic field of African cinema. It builds on the works by these three scholars by proposing a typology of diegetic African film music: griot performances, embedded entertainment, ritual performances, music-themed narrative films, and the musical film genre. Film music is an aesthetic and creative tool that is critical in both shaping the viewer's experience of the story and adding layers of meaning to the storytelling. The chapter provides examples of films that Wasis Diop has composed. It examines whether it is diegetic or non-diegetic, music is omnipresent in sub-Saharan African films in different variations. Diegetic music is deployed in several ways in African cinema that can be grouped into five main categories: griot performances, embedded entertainment, ritual performances, music-themed narrative films, and the musical film genre.
