ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 illuminates a variety of the most common policy issues mathematics faculty encounter. It encourages readers to learn the requirements of their departments and contemplate the remaining policies they must set for their courses. The beginning of the chapter explores the pros and cons of common assessment tools and grading schemes. Also included are the issues of attendance and participation, calculator and phone or laptop use, and missing or late papers. The chapter concludes with the construction of a syllabus, which emphasizes offering clarity to students and maintaining flexibility for the instructor. A sample syllabus is provided to illustrate elements of the chapter discussion.
