ABSTRACT

Futurists and others have worked to set out both reasons why we should care about future generations and what our obligations should be to future generations. Caring for future generations comports with deeply held values related to justice, virtue, and goodness. This chapter argues that we should care about humanity’s self-actualizing journey through time and space. The notion of the journey is deeply resonant with human myth and psychology. It is also argued that humanity not only should protect its journey for itself but also for all other species of earth life as we are earth’s most logical hope to transcend the oblivion of the sun. Relating back to the literature in psychology, it should also be noted that self-actualization also encompasses other psychological needs, such as love and belongingness. One criticism posits that caring for future generations is impossible because obligations can only be made between living and identifiable beings.
