ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses specifically on collaboratively discussing feedback with parents. In cases where parents have been actively involved and have already made shifts toward a new family narrative, much of what is discussed will not be new. Rather it will be a consolidation of the major findings and a time to collaborate on answers to parents’ Assessment Questions. In contrast, if parents have been less engaged and less able to make shifts toward a systemic perspective and new narrative, the assessor treads more lightly and cautiously in response to what parents are ready for. Three options are offered for organizing the assessment results and examples of each provided. Following, the importance of being prepared to support parents’ emotional reactions to the feedback is stressed. Next, a series of steps for preparing for the session and a guide to conducting the session are presented. The chapter ends by returning to the case study being followed across chapters.
