ABSTRACT

The writers considered in this chapter address how rhetoric is implicated in the distribution of power, how the history of Western rhetoric has been written from a male perspective, and the characteristics of some non-Western rhetorics. Postmodern writers like Lyotard, Foucault, and Derrida are introduced. Feminist theories are explored, as rhetoricians such as Sally Miller Gearhart and Sonja Foss interrogate traditionally male sources of knowledge and power. Historians such as James Crump and George Kennedy examine how rhetorical practices adapt to various cultural contexts. Arabic sources of the European rhetorical tradition—especially Averroes—are also explored.
