ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 sets the stage. It describes the establishment of Habsburg rule in Austria and the Holy Roman Empire and the dynasty’s response to the division of Western Christianity in the sixteenth century. Yet it also places the ensuing conflict in its historical and theoretical context, focusing especially on its recollection in Austrian public memory.
