ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to provide an overview of the energy scenario in South Asia and the current level of regional energy cooperation. The chapter is divided into three broad sections. The first section provides a detailed analysis of the region’s energy scenario. This includes analysis of resource endowments, the primary energy mix, energy imports, and the composition of electricity fuel. Various shortcomings in terms of the region’s capacity to meet rising energy demands are discussed. The second section, provides an overview of the current state of regional energy cooperation in South Asia. It provides a historical context of such cooperation and highlights contemporary developments. The third section of the chapter undertakes a review of existing literature on energy cooperation in South Asia. It examines both academic studies and institutional reports to provide an analysis of general trends within this body of literature. The chapter identifies a range of research gaps in the realms of political, security and environmental challenges.
