ABSTRACT

One of the challenges many coaches encounter with the Gestalt approach is how long it takes to get from an elementary, basic understanding to a deeper level of familiarity with its core concepts and competence in its methodology and practice. If you recognise this yourself, you will probably resonate with Hanafin (2004) when he says ‘I understood Gestalt for ten years before I realised I didn’t understand Gestalt’. There are no easy answers here, no clever short-cuts: it takes time, discipline, practice, and regular access to skilled teachers and practitioners. In this final chapter I set out the options for the coach who wants to learn the Gestalt approach and achieve genuine proficiency.
