ABSTRACT

This chapter explores what’s meant by working with the ‘what is’, or current reality, technically known as the phenomenological approach, and another cornerstone of the Gestalt approach. Working phenomenologically requires that you stay as faithful as possible to the obvious, such as the actual words used, energetic presence, mood, body language, and feeling states. You’re tuning in, as far as possible, to what your client is getting in touch with, and this is founded on the belief that there is inherent wisdom in direct, felt experience.
