ABSTRACT

A mentally healthy school sees positive mental health and wellbeing as fundamental to its values, mission and culture. It is a school where child, staff and parent/carer mental health and wellbeing is seen as everybody's business. The research is now helping us to understand that the earlier preventative support is available to children and young people the more beneficial it is to their positive wellbeing. Wellbeing champions are students that champion emotional wellbeing and positive mental health within the school setting and wider community. Training children and young people to be wellbeing champions can be beneficial for the school, the children and the young people who attend the school as well as for the children and young people who wish to support others and develop a more positive culture towards mental health and wellbeing. It is important to remember that one way of working does not suit all schools.
