ABSTRACT

The benefits of the Wellbeing Champions project are wide-ranging. They include supporting children and young people (CYP) who need support, enabling CYP to learn skills and strategies that support others and extending the support the school environment offers. The first area that has to be explored is understanding what staff, parents and children think are the things the school does well in supporting mental health and wellbeing and what they would like it to do more of to develop further. It is really important that the Wellbeing Champions project is reflective of and responsive to the needs of the CYP within the school environment. There is nothing more disheartening for CYP than to be chosen to do something and then have nothing to actually do. When thinking about setting up a Wellbeing Champions Group many staff have concerns about the safety of and risk to both the Champions and the CYP they support.
