ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews a few approaches to addressing the resistance to change issues; however, the single most powerful countermeasure of all is early employee involvement, which will be the catalyst for long-term engagement. It deals with a quick review of motivation versus demotivation. Some of the more literature on motivation appears to support Frederick Herzberg’s original motivation/demotivation distinction, though with different terminology. There are some cases where the absence of a motivational factor can produce the environment for demotivation to breed. Addressing the challenge by building motivation and ability across all three sources, personal, social, and structural, is what provides the leverage to overcome the odds. The chapter focuses on how leaders at every level must create the right environment to enable individuals to personally turn on their own internal motivational switches. It presents multiple sources which take a deep dive into the topics of resistance to change, motivation, and influence.
