ABSTRACT

This chapter proposes three views of managing workforce diversity: managing diversity, valuing diversity, and managing for diversity. Managing diversity helps people of all backgrounds have equal access to employment, promotion, and personnel policies. Organizations that manage diversity react to the presence of workforce diversity and do not try to increase diversity. The chapter explains workforce diversity and the likely effects of quality management on an organization. It describes several diversity dimensions and the direction in which many organizations are headed in managing for quality. The chapter discusses workforce diversity effects on organizations and management, quality management and its history and some issues and implications of managing organizations in an increasingly global environment. It outlines how technological changes will affect modern organizations and their management. The chapter lists the effects of specific technologies on modern organizations. It identifies some dimensions of country cultures that distinguish one culture from another.
