ABSTRACT
This chapter introduces the Looking Glass expert system for assessing threat in written communication. This was based on an examination of 206 cases that involved written threat and provides a method to use escalating and mitigating threats to determine the overall risk of dangerousness. The chapter provides details on the data gleaned from those cases. Ten escalating elements and ten mitigating elements are then defined with examples provided from real world cases. A scoring guide is provided to determine the risk level present in a given writing sample, which include suggested interventions at each level.
