ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter describes the author’s personal experience of learning in English as the medium of instruction (EMI), especially the challenges faced. I thus illustrate that there may be instances where students have insufficient English skills or are not adequately supported by their teachers, hence the need for a full English education. Recognising the need for EMI research to address the language barriers faced by students, this chapter introduces the general background of EMI research, the development of EMI policy in Hong Kong, the different medium of instruction models, and provides an overview of the subsequent chapters of the book, highlighting the significance of such EMI studies.
