ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 reviews relevant previous research on English medium instruction (EMI) with a focus on the teaching and learning of content subjects such as science, critically evaluates these previous studies, identifies existing gaps in knowledge, formulates the research questions and argues for the need to conduct the current study. Building on the global language of instruction model and the development of EMI policy in Hong Kong discussed in Chapter 1, I review topics that are directly related to my research questions, including research on EMI classroom interactions and teachers’ and students’ perceptions of their EMI experiences, language challenges and coping strategies.
