This chapter sets out the methodology adopted for the study underlying this book. Although several frameworks have been developed specifically for the analysis of multimodal documents, the methodology adopted here draws on several methodological insights and models, particularly the triangle of communication model, (corpus-assisted) Critical Discourse Analysis, Qualitative Content Analysis, and (Polytextual) Thematic Analysis. This chapter also provides an overview of the data collected for this project; the core corpus comprised editorial features and adverts related to cosmetic procedures and beauty products/services across 48 issues of Cosmopolitan, Marie Claire, FHM, and the Gay Times. Lastly, this chapter presents the sample and process of the (group) interviews which were organised to provide insight into the perception of the lifestyle magazine materials and the wider cosmetic surgery and beauty industry.
