ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we examine the systems of values and instruments that tethered moral and social impulses to future formulation of human rights; which ideas have had an impact on events that shaped human rights norms and institutions in Western societies; and how have Enlightenment thinkers’ conceptions of rights explain, justify, and/or challenge Western colonialism and the rights of indigenous peoples.
