ABSTRACT

This chapter is an extensive expansion of the material found in the first edition due to the advances in both theory and practice. Expanding the traditional triad of epistemology, ontology, and axiology, it adds aesthetics and pedagogy to round out the discussion of what is conveyed in any medium including written texts. This lays a firm philosophical foundation for how Mirror Theatre approaches its projects, and, while all are debatable, they provide possible perspectives for theatre practitioners and researchers alike. Discussions include truth claims, dialogic versus didactic communication, the spirit of play, disclosure, representation, participatory theatre, co-ownership, trust, Tuckman’s forming, storming, norming and performing stages, and choices of naturalism, realism, and impressionism, all of which underpin how Mirror Theatre conducts research and disseminates it to live audiences either in person or online.
