ABSTRACT

Accomplishment refers to the development of one’s potential by pursuing and attaining meaningful goals, and having a sense of achievement, competence, and success. In this chapter, the author provides an overview of the sense of accomplishment of autistic students in school based on the perspectives of the participants in her study. She also provides a discussion of strategies to enable them to have a sense of accomplishment in school. Feeling accomplished in school was also deemed as important by the autistic students in her study, as students spoke of their ambitions, which were diverse among them, and included being an author, musician, photographer, obtaining a degree in engineering and sciences, and doing “something in marine science”. To assist students in developing a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset, teachers should first ensure that they themselves possess a growth mindset, as the way teachers view ability and their beliefs about their students’ potential has a significant influence on their teaching practices.
