ABSTRACT

Accountability involves someone or something explaining why they have done or not done something to others. Accountability for police activity in England and Wales is an important part of the policing structure. This chapter explains these accountability processes from an organisational viewpoint and also from an individual standpoint. It explains the reasons why the police should be accountable for their actions, which includes the fact that the police are powerful and have the ability to use force against other civilians. As well as examining the structures that exist for this purpose, including the role of Police and Crime Commissioner, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, the position and role of the constable is examined in detail.
