ABSTRACT

For many policing in England and Wales is seen as a local affair, involving local accountability to such as police and Crime Commissioners in their area. This chapter introduces the reader to the sometimes complex world of national policing structures in England and Wales, such as the National crime Agency and its many functions. It critically examines national police forces and how their powers intertwine with the powers of officers from the other 43 forces in England and Wales. The chapter also explores the concept of Mutual Aid, and how it works, as well as explaining the rational and function of the Strategic Policing requirement. This is used to illustrate how the local policing structures link with national structures and requirements in the country. In addition, the chapter considers the important agencies that are responsible for well-being, working conditions, and education of police officers.
