ABSTRACT

Having discussed the history of the police in England and Wales and how its current structures are related to this history, as well as at national and international levels, this chapter now turns to consideration of future structures and influences that may affect current policing arrangements. Acknowledging that policing always has, and will continue, to change and be influenced by outside factors, the chapter considers some of the prevalent challenges. Such issues as future demand, public expectations, the potential impact of plural policing structures, predictive policing as well as the use of big data are explored. The chapter also seeks to explain how such changes occur and potential these changes have to influence current policing structures in England and Wales.
