ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth discussion of the new social field of events-for-development (EfD), outlining avenues where events have and are being utilised for social, cultural, political, and economic development in disadvantaged settings. First, we discuss the historical development of the EfD social field and important theoretical/conceptual understandings that have been tapped to undergird scholarship in this area. Next, the scholarship revolving around EfD as related to economic, social, cultural, and political outcomes is reviewed, followed by a discussion on the challenges associated with EfD. Managerial implications for EfD are then elucidated before we close with thoughts on next steps and outlook for the EfD arena.
