ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth discussion of event leverage and then illuminates recent advances in leverage thinking. Throughout, examples of events that engage in the leveraging approach, from smaller community-based offerings to mega-events, are highlighted. First, we discuss the distinction between legacy and leverage, followed by an overview of the development of leverage theory and its key principles. Next, we highlight the strategies, tactics, and recent advances regarding economic leverage of events, social leverage of events, event leverage for sport participation and physical activity, and event leverage as related to several additional outcomes. We then elucidate challenges associated with the leverage paradigm, followed by thoughts on managerial implications. Finally, we conclude by offering ideas on the next steps for event leverage scholarship and practice.
