ABSTRACT

This chapter explores ways to facilitate learning among groups of adult music students in their twenties, thirties, forties and fifties. It discusses group instruction and larger ensemble organizations and rehearsals. A class of second-age adults may include a vast array of ages, with students at different lifespan stages. However, meaningful learning opportunities can be created among mixed age groups, especially if they play at a similar level. Depending on the instrument or skill level of the group members, it can be challenging to locate appropriately leveled solo arrangements, chamber or ensemble music for instrumental and vocal group classes. When setting rehearsal times for new groups, instructors and conductors should consider other activities in which second-age adults might be involved. While there will never be an ideal day, evening or time for everyone, young parents may have to shepherd their children to team sporting events on weekends or specific weeknights and help with homework and bedtime rituals each evening.
