ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the role of technology in daily lives of adults and how it may be used to assist with music learning. It surveys present technology and apps for asynchronous and synchronous music learning and discusses how these may be used with and by adults in informal, nonformal and formal settings. Technology provides accessibility to music learning opportunities for many adults. Even before coronavirus pandemic necessitated the transition to online lessons, a small number of music teachers were exploring, and even embracing, teaching online. The pace of technological development and change is swift, but some technological resources are useful for adult students, whether they study online or in person. The two categories of technology worth considering are technology that assists student learning and technology that facilitates teaching, studio engagement and instructor workflow. Video cameras or audio recorders can be used to make recordings that can be reviewed during the lesson, allowing adults to hear their performances during the lesson.
