ABSTRACT

This chapter delves into specifics of the music learning facilitation cycle, specifically helping adults frame reasonable musical expectations, identifying and reaching consensus on musical styles to be studied, and working through a student's past musical and learning experiences and motivation, in general. Stephen D. Brookfield proposes six principles for effective adult teaching and learning. He suggests that the learning must be voluntary, there is respect among fellow learners and the facilitators, the facilitation process is collaborative, the learning process is cyclic and includes activity, collaborative reflection, evaluation and new activity, critical reflection is fostered and the learning results in the self-reflective, empowered adults. Typically, students will reach out to a music instructor via phone or email. While teachers are often recommended by word of mouth, they should expect that potential students will visit their studio, class or ensemble website for information about the music program.
