ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues, concerns and strategies for healthful music facilitation across an entire career of working with adult music students. It draws on emerging research into the important topic of professional musician health and well-being. For many adult educators, the constant learning and development nourishes and refreshes the teaching soul. However, this type of personal exploration, concern for adult students' needs and teaching adaptations for learners at various lifespan stages requires much preparation and energy. Job insecurity, common among professional musicians who lead multi-faceted portfolio careers, has been identified as a significant source of stress for musicians. Much of the research on burnout in music has explored burnout among primary and secondary school teachers or music therapists. Teachers who work with adults must remember to take care of their own physical, emotional and mental health first. This can be challenging for busy musicians. Light physical activity is good for the body and mind.
