ABSTRACT

Teaching music can be a rewarding, yet stressful, profession. While many music educators are drawn to teaching by a passion for creative music making and inspiring others to learn, challenges such as classroom management, administrative tasks, and political mandates can cause stress, and, if unchecked, burnout. This chapter offers an overview of stress, both distress and eustress, and presents an introduction to the remaining chapters regarding sleep, physical movement, nutrition, gratitude, happiness, and mindfulness – the book’s six routes to wellness and vitality.
