ABSTRACT

The most bitter contest that has ever been waged has been the current discussion over the credibility of the first chapter of the book of Genesis. For more than fifty years the most brilliant minds that infidelity and modernism (the Siamese twins of Satan’s spawning) could marshal to the attack, have been concentrated on this one chapter in the book of Genesis. By them Moses has been defamed and contradicted from every conceivable angle because of his claims of special creation. The most recent attack has been launched against this first chapter of Genesis from the redoubts of modern science, and infidelity in this new disguise has contended for a generation that the facts of science constitute a refutation of this entire chapter. This is a serious indictment indeed, and the modern student is entitled to know the facts. Is it a literal truth that science is at variance with Moses? Indeed it is not; rather the contrary is true: there is such a magnificent and complete agreement between the established facts of physical science and the first chapter of Genesis that no human explanation of this strange phenomenon is possible. How is it to be explained on any natural basis? Here is a chapter of a book written in the seventeenth century before Christ, in a day of ignorance and superstition. Yet when we examine that book in the light of modern scientific discoveries, it contains the most recent facts of physics, botany and astronomy; and has maintained this marvelous harmony with scientific truth for ages before these sciences were born.
