ABSTRACT

The responses to public outcries to gender inequity have included new legislation on the federal, state, and local levels, the creation of new male advocacy groups, national pledges, city and state initiatives, innovative approaches in specific industries, and individual company strategies. The proposed legislation calls for increasingly stringent guidelines to be implemented in 2021. The Equal Pay Act charges filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission confirm the problem was not eliminated with the legislation. The UK has identified with its recent legislation that simply legislating equal pay for equal work may not be enough to close the gender pay gap. The proposed federal Paycheck Fairness Act mandates pay data reporting, provides for grants to deliver negotiation training to women, and makes it easier to file class action lawsuits.
